Lavalliere
Lavallière, chic & effortless | Inoui Editions
The lavalliere: between heritage and modernity
Born in the 17th century, the lavallière takes its name from the ribbons worn by the Duchess of La Vallière at the court of Louis XIV. Adopted by 19th-century dandies, then by artists, intellectuals, and style icons, it has crossed centuries without ever losing its relevance.
Somewhere between a scarf, a bow and a tie, the lavallière is a hybrid accessory, free and assertive. At Inoui Editions, it becomes a true canvas of expression: graphic, elegant, freely styled. Reimagined in noble fabrics and dressed in exclusive designs, it is worn as a statement piece, a textile accent able to transform a silhouette.
Lavallière, tie, ascot, bow tie: what sets them apart?
These four accessories share a common territory, that of the collar and the neckline, yet each carries its own character.
The tie is long, structured, tied to formality. The bow tie plays on symmetrical elegance and assumed whimsy. The ascot is tucked into the neckline of a white shirt or an open collar, with a more enveloping effect.
The lavallière stands apart through its softness and freedom of styling. Narrower and longer than an ascot, it ties with fluidity, without stiffness. It is the accessory of the spontaneous gesture, the detail that speaks without ever overstating.
How to wear a lavallière
Thanks to its suppleness and elongated shape, the lavallière lends itself to countless ways of being worn, depending on mood and style:
Tied around the neck, in a classic knot or a more romantic bow, over a white shirt or against bare skin. Loose over a shirt collar, in contrast on a sweater or beneath a jacket. Tied in the hair as a soft headband or around a chignon. Cinched at the waist, to define a line or reinvent a dress. Tied to a bag handle with a discreet knot, as a textile signature.
Unisex and versatile, it adapts to every style: dressed up, casual, androgynous, or poetic.
A noble material: silk
Our lavallières are crafted in 100% silk, woven in India using time-honored textile know-how. Fluid and luminous, silk reveals every nuance of the design and follows movement with grace. Its lightness and brilliance make it an accessory of choice for everyday wear as much as for a singular occasion.
Exclusive illustrations born in our French studio
Each lavalliere begins as a drawn story, imagined and composed by hand by our in-house artists. Our motifs come to life in our French creative studio, with the same demand as a work on canvas. Color, line, and scale are conceived to express themselves through the movement of the fabric.
Our lavallières are not simply fashion accessories: they are narrative pieces, carrying a free, sensitive, sometimes dreamlike, always singular gaze on the world.
Craftsmanship: a know-how rooted in India
Inoui Editions entrusts the making of its pieces to a long-standing partner based in India, where traditional textile know-how lives on. Weaving, printing, and finishing: each lavallière is the fruit of meticulous handwork, carried out with respect for both gesture and material. A long and precious tradition, which we are committed to honoring through our collections.

Everything you need to know about our lavallières
A long and narrow textile accessory, to be tied with fluidity around the neck, in the hair or at the waist. Born at the court of Louis XIV, made popular by the elegant figures of the 19th century, it embodies a certain idea of free, refined and assertive style. By turns romantic, intellectual or daring, it crosses eras without ever losing its glow.
The tie is long, structured, associated with formality. The lavallière is softer, freer in the way it is worn: tied with fluidity around the neck, in the hair or at the waist. It is the accessory of the spontaneous detail, less codified than the tie, more assertive than a simple scarf.
Absolutely. The lavallière suits feminine and masculine silhouettes alike. Graphic and expressive, it moves across genders with ease and adapts to every style, from the most refined to the most relaxed.
Our lavallières come in different formats depending on the collection. Widths range from 5 to 10 cm, lengths from 67 to 120 cm. These proportions allow great freedom of styling, from a classic knot to a looser, more graphic drape.
We recommend dry cleaning as a first choice. If you prefer to hand wash, use cold water and a mild soap, without rubbing or wringing. Avoid tumble drying and direct sunlight to preserve the brilliance and vivacity of the colours.
